Las Palmas (NE corner of Island)
These pictures are from Playa Las Canteras, Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Espana. This means, "Quarry Beach, Las Palmas, Canary Islands, Spain". Each picture is a thumbnail and links to a high resolution picture in a new browser window. Further down are pictures from other parts of the island (the west side, the center, and the south side of the island). In the first set, there are some really detailed sand sculptures that were in progress and finished while I was there. There is a Nativity theme to them. For a high resolution map of the island showing cities and highways, follow the link. For a topographical map that gives an idea of the rocky altitudes on La Gran Canaria, follow the link.

West Side of Gran Canaria
These pictures are from the west side of the island where the terrain is much rockier than Las Palmas. The place we stopped at is called "Dedo de Dios", which means "finger of God"; it's near Puerto de la Aldeia. It can be seen in the background (what's left of it) in the last picture (the one with the guy sitting down fishing) near the tip of the fishing pole. In November 2005, tropical storm Delta battered the island and broke the "finger" off; it was previously about 50% taller. This place was really off the beaten path, most folks vacation along the south coast and most citizens live in Las Palmas.

Center of Gran Canaria
These pictures are from the center of La Gran Canaria. We started out from the west side of the island at Puerto de la Aldeia (Dedo de Dios) and made our way to Tejeda. The temperature in Tejeda was 15 degrees cooler and there were pine trees all around. The road started out as a paved path and eventually widened near Tejeda. The road was so curvy and narrow that we had to honk the horn each time we approached a blind curve. The pictures with houses are from Tejeda, while the rest were taken along the way.

South Side of Gran Canaria
These pictures are from the south side of the island where most tourists go. The beaches are wide and long. There are sand dunes there as well.
